摘要:

  2017年5月25日雅思考试A类大作文真题回忆:

Detailed description of crimes on newspaper and TV can have bad consequences on society, so this kind of information should be restricted on media. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Crime coverage is always eye-catching and is therefore favored by many journalists of newspapers and TV programs. Although some of these reports may provide useful information, I believe that most of the crime details should not be available to ordinary audiences or readers through media.

Some disclosure of crimes may allow people to take necessary precautions to avoid falling victim to certain offences. For example, by learning from media about the locations where robbery or sexual assault has been most likely to happen, individuals especially those vulnerable ones could try not to approach the vicinity of those places; similarly, after being informed about how burglars broke into a house in recent incidents, house or apartment owners can take preventative measures such as installing security system to make their dwelling place much safer.

However, it is not appropriate for many other types of crime-related details to be known by the general public. First, some details may provide potential criminals with lessons about how to commit a crime while minimizing the risks of being caught. Such details may include how a convict made preparations and plans before the crime, and how he or she wiped clean any trace that might provide a lead for the police to crack the case. Similarly, details about how the police managed to track down the suspects should also be kept secret as these may actually prompt professional criminals to develop countermeasures, which may make future detecting tasks harder.

Furthermore, there is also the concern of the privacy of victims and even offenders. Most victims do not want to be in the spotlight, so any form of reporting which may expose their personal information to the publicshould be restricted. The privacy of criminals should also be protected, because in most cases, they should not be subject to punishment outside the confinement of law. This is not only to respect human rights they deserve, but is also to rehabilitate them more effectively by allowing them to readapt to society more easily after release.

To conclude, apart from a few reports that aim at informing the public about potential risks and security measures, most of the crime details should not be available on media, particularly given the fact that they can be easily accessed by impressionable children and teenagers.
