Some people think advertising has positive economic effects. Others, however, think it has negative social effects because individuals are not satisfied with who they are and what they have. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Advertising is now an indispensable part of modern economy. There are of course various negatives related to the prevalence of advertisements, but the detrimental effects in social and psychological aspects are drawing increasingly moreattention.
The economic benefits of advertising are obvious. First, advertising is in itself a multi-billion-dollar industry which offers a huge number of job opportunities and contributes enormous sums to tax revenues. Furthermore, through marketing tactics ranging from tempting pictures to celebrity endorsements and discount information, advertisements can undoubtedly stimulate consumers' purchasing desire, which increases the sales of products and promotes the development of various industries.
However, the subliminal messages conveyed by advertisements always make the audiences feel that they can resemble the glamorous models or enjoy the wonderful life as depicted in the advertisements. But in reality, most consumers eventually feel disappointed after purchasing the advertised products which have failed to live up to their expectations. For example, most people have the experience of finding that a jacket or dress, which fits the ad model so well, may not be suitable for themselves at all. Such disappointment may reduce a sense of self-worth or even lead to lowself-esteem.
Another common way for advertisements to boost the sales of products is to constantly tempt consumers with new and better products. One may have just bought a TV with 4K resolution, but he may soon find that a new type of TV with 3D displaying effects is even more cost-effective. In other words, what consumers have in hand can never be the best and there is always a reason for them to get rid of old items for more updated ones even though the old ones are still functioning well. Such consumer culture will inevitably lead to a series of social problems. For one thing, the resultant strong personal desire for more material possessions is closely linked to individuals' heavy debt, high level of anxiety and stress, and immoral or even illegal measures to become rich. For another, consumers' high spending arguably leads to overconsumption of unsustainable natural resources and increased amounts of carbon emissions due to expanded production.
To conclude, while the benefits brought by advertising should be recognized, individuals need to be alert to its detrimental effects so as not to be enslaved by them.
