Many young people today leave school with a negative attitude towards learning. Why?What can be done to encourage a positive attitude to learning in young people?
It is certainly regrettable that many school leavers are reluctant to look back to their study experiences. Therefore, reasons need to be identified and solutions suggested.
The most obvious cause of students' negative feelings about learning is their failure at school, meaning that the underachieving students tend to associate their learning experience with a sense of frustration and low self-esteem. Their poor performances are mainly due to a lack of strong motivation to apply themselves at school. Some of them might, for example, have been addicted to all sorts of electronic games, thus unable to focus their attention on comparatively boring academic activities. Others might have little interest in regular academic disciplines but have somehow been forced to study what they do not like at all. Another cause may have to do with the current school evaluation system, which places too much emphasis on exams. Unfortunately, most students (even some top students alike) have a natural fear for tests which frequently involve stress and failure.
To remedy this unfortunate situation, perhaps the first thing is for parents to help their children realize the importance of study. They need to spend more time supervising their children to ensure that the youngsters are developing desirable learning habits and are not being distracted by certain addictive activities. Furthermore, school evaluation system may also have to be modified so that exams will not be at the heart of education. Teachers should try their best to connect classroom learning with real life problems and solutions. This may not only allow students to have a greater interest in learning and thus to achieve more, but may also prevent them from linking study to stressful examinations.
In conclusion, helping students secure a sense of achievement and making them realize the benefits of learning are the key to developing in them a positive attitude toward study.
